Our
first real work on 160M from Vietnam
Special
Contest Call 3
W 3 W
- Doson, Vietnam
We are back in Hanoi, the expedition was successful, but we had many problems
with the local authorities to get permission to setup the antenna and equipment.
We got very close to canceling the expedition as the local police phoned all
hotels along the coast line, not to let us operate and rent rooms to us.
Saturday 27.01 at 1300 Local we got the permission at the 3rd alternative
location after the primary locations were rejected by the police and the hotel
owners.

After inspection by the local police, signing of agreements and checking of
serial numbers on the equipment, we started operation 3 hours after sunset. The
first night we used a dipole on a 17m mast, 2 meters from the sea. For the
second night this antenna was modified to an L antenna or modified GP antenna,
20m slanted vertical part and 20m horizontal, plus one radial of 42 meters long
about 3 meters above the sea water. This worked better. We`did not have enough
height for the projected delta loop, which was planned for location 1.
In order to escape the local electrical noise of S9 + 40dB on 160m, we had to
operate from the car of Stan 3W9JR, sitting at a table beside the trunk of the
car under an umbrella, the temperatures outside were quite low at night, we had
to wrap ourselves in blankets while operating.... The receiving antenna was an
active whip, 2 meters tall, with 100m coax, away from the transmitting antenna.
We made about 250 QSOs, many EU and a few US stations.
Finaly we made 257 QSO with more than 100K points.
